Opposition leader in Venezuela is Kenyon alumnus

Members of the Kenyon College community watched news of Venezuela’s political unrest with concern this week as one of their alumni was arrested on a warrant accusing him of instigating violence.

Leopoldo Lopez, the leader of a movement opposing President Nicolas Maduro, graduated from Kenyon in 1993 with a sociology degree.

Initially accusing him of murder and terrorism, authorities have since charged Lopez with lesser counts of instigating arson, damage and criminal gatherings.
